Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfection

UV disinfection is a chemical-free water treatment that neutralises bacteria, viruses, moulds, and other microorganisms without affecting taste, odour, or leaving residues. It is widely used for its speed, reliability, and environmental safety.

System Components:

  • Stainless steel reactor chamber,

  • UV lamps,

  • Quartz sleeves protecting lamps and maintaining temperature.

Water passing through the chamber is exposed to UV light, which disrupts microbial DNA, preventing reproduction and inactivating pathogens.

Applications:

  • Industrial and commercial water systems,

  • Residential drinking water supplies,

  • Effluent and wastewater treatment,

  • Swimming pools and display water features,

  • Water filtration, recycling systems, aquaculture, horticulture, and rainwater harvesting.

How It Works

UV light (typically 254 nm) disrupts DNA of bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

  • Legionella pneumophila is easily neutralised at low doses,

  • Pseudomonas species require higher exposure.

UV disinfection is faster than chlorine-based methods, cost-efficient, low-maintenance, and environmentally friendly.

Maintenance & Lamp Replacement

UV lamp intensity gradually decreases over time (solarization). To maintain performance:

  • Replace lamps annually or after ~9000 hours,

  • Clean quartz sleeves and housing,

  • Monitor coliform and heterotrophic bacteria monthly for the first six months,

  • Disinfect the system if bacteria are detected.

UV systems are often used alongside other controls, such as temperature monitoring, in line with guidance for Legionella prevention.

Quick Facts:

  • Fast and effective, no retention tanks needed,

  • Taste-neutral, ideal for food and bottling plants,

  • Safe and eco-friendly, no hazardous chemicals,

  • Compatible with other systems, including RO,

  • Cost-efficient and compact,

  • Superior viral control.
