Chlorination & Sterilisation

PM Technical Services delivers comprehensive pre- and post-commissioning chlorination and sterilisation services for both new and existing water systems. Our experienced engineers carry out chemical treatments in full accordance with current regulatory frameworks, including HSC ACoP (2013), ensuring safe and compliant operation across domestic and commercial installations.

Legionella Risk Management

The primary objective of chlorination and sterilisation is to control bacterial growth — with Legionella being the most critical concern. Our procedures follow HSG274 Part 2 guidance, supporting effective risk management and system hygiene. Legionella bacteria, commonly linked to Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever, pose serious health risks when present in water or HVAC systems. Routine sterilisation is essential to mitigate these risks and maintain safe conditions for building occupants.

Maintaining System Efficiency

Effective chlorination is a critical step in the commissioning of new water systems and should be completed prior to activation or set-to-work procedures. Even in well-designed systems, poor or irregular maintenance of cold water storage tanks can lead to bacterial contamination — compromising performance and safety.

Contaminant build-up creates favourable conditions for harmful bacteria such as Legionella and E. coli, increasing health risks and operational costs. PM Technical Services recommends routine testing and scheduled maintenance of cold water systems to ensure ongoing compliance, prevent microbiological growth, and safeguard system integrity.
